2022 Special Election – U.S. Representative

Please note the dates/schedule from the Press Briefing on the Alaska Division of Elections Website

“To fill a vacancy, the State must hold two special elections—a special primary and a special (general) election.”

“The candidate elected will serve the remainder of the unexpired term. AS 15.40.170. If the special primary is held on June 11, then the special (general) election will fall on August 16, the date of the regular primary. The special (general) election and the regular primary would then show up on the same ballot.”

This means is on August 16th, 2022 we would not only elect a new U.S Representative to finish out the current term ending in December 2022, we’d also be casting votes for the regular Primary Election to determine the 4 candidates that we will see on the November 8, 2022 General Election ballot. The winner of the November 8 General Election would then serve a full 2 year term beginning January 2023.

“A new Congress begins at noon January 3 of each odd-numbered year following a general election, unless it designates a different day by law. A Congress lasts for two years, with each year constituting a separate session.
